About the Book:

Miller Rounding Third is a historical fiction novel that begins in early 18th century Ireland with Peter Miller, whose son Liam immigrates to America in 1739. It follows the family through the Revolutionary War and Pre-Civil War eras, followed by four generations of Major League baseball players, beginning in 1869 with Reconstruction and the start of Major League Baseball. The similar struggles and growth of America and Major League Baseball are told through the four generations of Millers who play Major League Baseball.

About the Author:

Tommy Reynolds was born in New York City and raised in Long Beach, Long Island, seven houses from the beach. He attended Chaminade High School and Manhattan College, where he was a sports writer and co-sports editor of the school newspaper, The Quadrangle, covering the Jaspers basketball, baseball, and crew teams. He is an active racquetball player, softball player, and umpire, currently residing in Mendham, N.J. with his three children.

Open-Mic performances interspersed with Leaves of Grass

aois21's monthly Poetry Open-Mic returns this month with a special reading of Leaves of Grass by famed American poet Walt Whitman. aois21 publisher Keith F. Shovlin and others will be reading from Leaves of Grass in between performances of new and original poetry by local poets.
Over the past few months, we have been gathering at Walls of Books every two weeks for this event as well as Literary Game Night and decided that the poetry night needed an additional boost. Several events were severely lacking in attendance after an initial success last December.
This month's event will be live-streamed on the aois21 Periscope feed and posted to the aois21 YouTube channel and video.aois21.com afterward. Individual performances will also be released as episodes of the Passion on the Page podcast, which is currently on hiatus.

About the poets: Julayne Lee was given up for adoption in South Korea as a result of the Korean War. She was adopted by an all-white Christian family in Minnesota, where she grew up. She has spent over fifteen years working with Overseas Adopted Koreans (OAKs). She lived in Seoul and now resides in Los Angeles, where she is a member of the LA Futbolistas and Adoptee Solidarity Korea—Los Angeles (ASK-LA). She is also part of the Adoptee Rights Campaign working to pass the Adoptee Citizenship Act to ensure all inter-country adoptees have US citizenship. This is her first book.

Born in the Bronx, NY, along with his four brothers and sisters, Michael B. Judkins' childhood memories, although bittersweet, provided a rich foundation for him to draw upon later in life as an accomplished author. After spending years immersed in typical, reactive adolescent behaviors, Michael began experimenting with other alternatives to developing new relationships and helping resolve social issues. As he took these first, proactive steps, the germ of the idea for his first book – Introduction to Sentimental Me! – was born. The Gaithersburg Book Festival is a celebration of the written word and its power to enrich the human experience. Our mission is to foster an interest in reading, writing and literary conversation.

Since its inception in 2010, the Festival has quickly become one of the nation’s top literary events, attracting hundreds of award-winning and best-selling authors, poets and songwriters from across the country to its quaint, park-like setting in the heart of Olde Towne Gaithersburg.

The event was conceived and introduced by Gaithersburg Mayor (then council member) Jud Ashman, with the support of the Mayor and City Council and the Cultural Arts Advisory Committee. The Festival is produced by a core committee comprised of city staff and a dedicated group of volunteers who donate their time and talent.

Funded in part by generous sponsors and supported by the City of Gaithersburg, the Festival offers programming for all ages, is free to attend and is open to everyone.

April twenty-third (the festival is on the nearest Sunday) is a symbolic day in world literature. Declared as International Day of the Book by UNESCO in 1995, this celebration of books and literature draws its inspiration from a Catalan tradition, the Festival of the Rose.

Legend has it that Saint George, Patron Saint of Catalonia (Spain) and international knight-errant, slew a dragon about to devour a beautiful Catalan princess. From the dragon’s blood sprouted a rosebush, from which the hero plucked the prettiest rose for the princess. Hence the traditional Rose Festival celebrated in Barcelona since the Middle Ages to honor chivalry and love. In 1923, this lover’s “festa” became even more poetic when it merged with “el dia del llibre”, or The Day of the Book, to mark the nearly simultaneous deaths of Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare, the two giants of literary history, on April 23, 1616.

On this day in Barcelona, bookstalls and street festivities run the length of the picturesque La Rambla, the old city’s main boulevard and, according to the Spanish author Garcia Lorca, “the only street in the world which I wish would never end”.
